Review: Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

Malcolm Gladwell

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without ThinkingThis book was lovely to read; it offered some new insights that helped me to feel more confident about trusting my instinctive responses to people and situations. We are frequently given advice about creating good first impressions, and then often dismiss our own initial instinctive responses to other people in the light of new information – often finding out later that our first impression was correct! We sometimes feel that it isn’t ‘scientific’ to rely on instinct; that we should refine our feelings about people through experience and give them a chance; but in doing so we deny a precious gift that Allah has blessed us with to assist us in our survival.

This book shows – through the use of scientific experiments – under which circumstances we should trust our instinctive responses to people, and under which circumstances we shouldn't. It offers advice on how we can train ourselves to be better at interpreting our initial reactions to people, all of which is great information for people who want to have more successful relationships with others!
