By Martha Beck

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I just loved it...it’s packed with loads of useful ideas and exercises and to help you find what Martha Beck calls your ‘North Star’ or the situation in which you can live the best version of your inner nature.
She describes us all as having two parts, an ‘essential self’ or what we as Muslims would call our ‘fitrah’ and a ‘social self’, the person we become to fit in with society. Many of us recognize that when we do try to fit with other’s perceptions of how we should live our lives that we can sometimes end up being someone we don’t recognise as us or that we end up ‘not feeling comfortable in our own skins’.
The journey Martha Beck takes you on is one of discovery, to find your essential self; the person Allah created you to be (although she doesn’t use that phrase) and then uses that knowledge along with the skills learned by the social self to help you create the life you were meant to live.
The last section of the book shows great insight into the process of change that people go through as a result of shocks, opportunities and transitions, offering sound advice and guidance on how to survive it and come through changes to arrive at your North Star.
If you’re happier reading self-help books than experiencing it
in a face-to-face situation, I’d definitely recommend this book to you and you
