Review: Hans Wehr's Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic

Hans Wehr's Dictionary

If you’re looking for a good dictionary of modern standard Arabic-English, this is the standard that I would thoroughly recommend; it's a must-have for your bookshelf. It's the dictionary I bought when I first started learning Arabic and I used so much that it fell apart and I had to have it re-bound. Not sure whether that says more about my Arabic skills or the dictionary! Whatever the case this truly is an invaluable book to have when you're studying Arabic seriously.

All the Arabic words are all broken down in this dictionary into their verbal root forms and then listed in the Arabic alphabetical order. Within each root form, there is then a list of all the words that have been derived from that root according to the form of their derivation. If you are a beginner it may seem complicated at first, but once you learn the system that Wehr uses, there will be very few Arabic words that you will want to know the meaning of that you won’t be able to find in this dictionary.
